A thick, viscous liquid that is clear, pale yellow in colour, Castor oil, is a popular ingredient in soap making due to its contribution to a dense, creamy, stable lather.

Castor oil is also a common ingredient to use in hair care products, due to its reputation for stimulating hair growth.  Castor oil can also enhance the absorption of other cosmetic ingredients. It is rarely associated with skin sensitivity, but can have a slightly sticky feel on skin.

Castor oil makes a softer bar of soap and is typically used at 10% or less in cold process recipes, with 2 to 5% being the most common.  A very popular addition to shaving soap and shampoo bar recipes.
